Map of the Recently Discovered Gold Regions in Western Kansas & Nebraska - 1859

The map is especially interesting because at the time, “Kansas” extended much farther west than the modern state does—into territory that is now Colorado. That's why you're seeing places associated with the Pikes Peak gold rush on what is described as western Kansas.

The map shows features such as Pikes Peak, Denver City, Auraria, gold regions/prospects, routes to the mines, the Santa Fe Trail, rivers, forts, mountain ranges, and the Kansas–Nebraska boundary.

This map is an 1859 map, right at the beginning of the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. That's about 167 years old today.

 Colorado Territory didn't even exist yet when this map was published. Colorado Territory wasn't organized until 1861. So someone can literally hang a map depicting the region of modern Colorado before Colorado existed as a territory.
